Help paying your electric or utility bill
Falling behind on a utility bill happens to a lot of people. There’s more help here than most people realize.
Call your utility company first
- Ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the past-due amount over a few months.
- Ask about budget billing, which evens out your bill so winter and summer don’t spike.
- Ask if they have a hardship program or a fund for customers who are behind.
LIHEAP: federal help with energy bills
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps with heating and cooling bills. It’s run through states and local agencies. Call 211 or visit 211.org to find where to apply near you.
If a shutoff is coming
Many states limit shutoffs in extreme weather or when someone in the home has a serious medical condition. Ask your utility what protections apply, and ask for any shutoff notice in writing.
